about

Seithrún Céiteann AKA Geoffrey Keating was an Anglo Irish priest who, during the Cromwellian invasion, was said to have been hidden in a cave by his loyal parishioners for several years. While in hiding he wrote his epic ''Foras Feasa ar Éireann'' or ''Foundation of Irish Wisdom'' which details the compiled lore of legend and history from Ireland's creation, through the confusion of tongues to the multiple invasions, the coming of Patrick and ColmCille to the Viking era and the rise of Brían Ború, the Normans, all the way to Keating's own time. It is filled with endless anecdotes, some archetypal, some tragic, some ludicrous, and page after page of songs and verses preserved from the oldest times. The introduction lambastes the English historians' meager views of Irish Antiquity, and he methodically skewers their vulgar propositions with a singular vitriol - his whole intent was to forever destroy the notion of Ireland as backward and uncivilized and to unequivocally present the case for her as the ''Ogygya'', or most ancient of lands, far older than Greece or Rome. As the descendant of Anglo-Norman aristocracy, Keating felt a particular calling to defend the people of his native land from the wildly inaccurate fallacies that led to the atrocities of Cromwell. The Classical Middle Irish of the original text is actually quite accessible to the modern Gaelic and Irish speaker, and can be viewed in multiple manuscripts of varying scrawliness of hand...
This song is but a humble tribute to Keating and his work, and the mind boggling vastness of Irish history. If you truly want the antidote for Anglo-Centric thinking, a mere few hours spent in the company of the good father Keating will have your brain turning in the endless spiraling whirlpools of the Gaelic mind...
