The first verse of this track appeared fully formed in my mind while convalescing and reading a collection of Fionnaidheachd, and the general tone of back and forth banter is pretty typical of a lot of the old Bàrdachd about Cù Chulainn. If you're not already familiar with the background to this tale, I highly suggest you read The Táin Bo Cuailnge in full.
Put very briefly, Maeve the Queen of Connaught is leading her army into Ulster to steal the prize bull known as the Dun Cuailnge, and the men of Ulster are unable to resister her as they are under the curse of Macha, having previously made her run a race against King Conchobhar's prize chariot while she was fully pregnant. The King's nephew Cù Chulainn is only 17 years old, but is unaffected by the curse as his true father is the old god of the Tuatha De Danann known as Lugh Samhildánach, and the song begins with him and his faithful charioteer Laogh preparing to do battle with the army of Maeve...
